Edgar Antonio López Román was born in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, on Saturday, August 10, 1968, to Mr. Edwin López and Mrs. María Román. He completed his early education in the Forest Hill and Río Hondo communities of Bayamón, attending Flamboyán Gardens Elementary School, José Antonio Dávila Middle School, and Dr. Agustín Stahl High School, where he consistently distinguished himself through outstanding academic performance. In 1992, he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in Accounting from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus. He began his professional career as an Auditor at the Juvenal Rivera Caratinni CPA Firm, where he gained extensive experience auditing more than 50 credit unions. In 1997, Mr. López Román joined the Las Piedras Cooperative as Accounting Supervisor. His leadership and expertise led to his promotion in 2004 to Vice President of Credit, a role in which he spearheaded the diversification of the cooperative’s financial portfolio. This expansion included personal, commercial, mortgage, auto, travel, emergency, and self-guaranteed loans, always guided by a mission to address the genuine needs of the cooperative’s members. Under his direction, individualized credit evaluation processes were implemented, achieving a balance between financial responsibility and accessibility. Since assuming the role of Executive Chairman in 2021, Mr. López Román has championed technological innovation to modernize credit application processes and enhance the overall member experience. He has also been a pioneer in the development of syndicated loans, promoting inter-cooperative collaboration to finance projects of significant economic and social impact in Puerto Rico. Through his visionary leadership, the Las Piedras Cooperative has become a recognized benchmark within the Puerto Rican cooperative movement, noted for its strong commitment to local businesses and sustainable economic development.
