Steven joined Unitus Community Credit Union as President/CEO in September 2016. Steven is responsible for guiding strategic leadership for the credit union by partnering with the Board of Directors, Leadership team, and staff in establishing long-range goals and strategic initiatives that provide superior member value. Steven served on the Board of Directors (2013-2020) with a two-year term as Board Chair of the World Council of Credit Unions, which is the leading international credit union trade association and development arm for credit union systems in developing nations. Steven continues to be active in the developing credit unions throughout the world and currently serves on the Advisory Board of the Via Stella Foundation, the Polish-American credit union initiative providing humanitarian aid to refugees from Ukraine. He also serves as Vice Chair on the Board of Currencē, which provides Visa debit/credit transaction services. Additionally, Steven serves as Immediate Past Chair of the WorldOregon Board of Trustees, which builds a global understanding through cross-culture learning opportunities. He is also a member of the Port of Portland International Air Service Committee and serves as Vice Chair of America’s Credit Unions World Affairs Committee. Previously, Steven served as Chair of Financial Service Centers Cooperative (FSCC) and Vice Chair of the CO-OP Shared Branch network. The Shared Branch network provides services to credit unions members throughout the United States and military institutions in foreign countries. Prior to joining Unitus, Steven served for eight years as the President/CEO of San Francisco Federal Credit Union, five years as Executive Vice President/Chief Financial Officer of Redwood Credit Union, and Senior Vice President/Operations of Golden 1 Credit Union. In these positions, he was responsible for all aspects of credit union operations, including strategic planning, financial management, expansion and growth of new services and products, organizational development, brand awareness, business and consumer lending, and operations. In 2019, Steven was recognized by the Oregon Consular Corps as a Global Ambassador, which is an annual recognition given to an organization or individual who excels at creating family wage jobs in Oregon and strengthens Oregon’s standing as a leader in international trade and investment. In 2025, Steven was the recipient of the World Council of Credit Unions Distinguished Service Award, which is the international credit union system’s highest honor to recognize member organizations and individuals for their outstanding contributions to credit union development outside their home country, as well as the national Reneé Sattiewhite Neoteric Changemaker Award, which recognizes leaders advancing innovation, equity, and impact across the credit union movement. In 2026, Steven received the National Credit Union Foundation Herb Wegner Memorial Award, the credit union movement’s highest national honors celebrating individuals and organizations that have made extraordinary, lasting contributions to improving financial well-being and advancing the credit union movement.
