Description
This session explores the evolution of Nusenda’s Microloan Program, a character-based and community-rooted lending model that is redefining how individuals and small businesses can access capital. Drawing from a newly developed Brown Paper and in-depth interviews with credit union staff, partners, and program participants, this discussion brings together a panel featuring authors, a borrower, and on-the-ground practitioners to reflect eight years of impact. Together, they will examine how trust, cultural relevance, and shared values shaped the creation of alternative underwriting models and advanced financial inclusion.
Attendees will gain actionable insights, replicable strategies, and real-world examples that can inspire innovation across Credit Unions and Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) seeking to expand financial inclusion. With $3.7 million lent, 534 loans, and a 97% repayment rate, this CDFI credit union model demonstrates what true success in character-based lending can look like. It challenges conventional financial norms by centering equity, relationships, and community voice at every step of the lending process.
